The Ghents

Martin and Ruth Mae Ghent
Before their graduation from New Brunswick Bible Institute, Martin and Ruth knew they wanted to serve God as missionaries in Japan. To prepare, they served five years as an assistant pastor at Erin Mills Baptist Church in Mississauga, Ontario and at a Japanese church in Toronto, where they gained pastoral experience and a realization of God's call as church planters. In 1986 after joining OMF International they moved to Sapporo, Japan for language training. Five years later, in 1991, they began their church planting work in Itayanagi, Aomori. Martin is currently the senior pastor for Tsugaru Gospel Church and has direct responsibility for the Itayanagi Chapel. Ruth Mae has a vital role in women's ministries in the church, helps with the baking for the Cafe Iris, and tries to keep their children on track in their schooling.

Martin enjoys woodworking and has built several churches with carpentry teams. He also enjoys creating stained glass windows. Ruth enjoys teaching, having taught English classes for most of their time in Japan.

They have four children: Bethany, Micah, Aaron and Naomi.
